Guide To Ibiza

By Kelly Alton

If you are looking for a fantastic Summer holiday then there is no doubt that Ibiza is one of the best options you could go for. Not only will it provide you with the sun that we all desire, but there is amazing beaches, brilliant night life and lots more besides.

First of all, where exactly is Ibiza? It is in the Mediterranean sea which means that it has a gorgeous climate of hot weather during the summer. It isn't always intensely hot but it is always warm enough to be pleasant and you will nearly always get lots of sunshine during the summer.

Also if you are planning on going in the winter it won't be as hot but it wont be that cold either. I'm from the UK and used to freezing temperatures, so an average temperature of 15 degrees for Mallorca seems like quite a good deal!

The first thing you should think about when planning any kind of holiday is how much of a budget you have. You don't want to spend a long time looking at lots of amazing villas in Mallorca only to discover that you can't afford them. There is a wide range of prices of villas on the island, so do yourself a favour and get your budget sorted early so you can narrow down your options.

Today you can also get flights a lot cheaper. Budget airlines such as EasyJet fly from all over Europe to the island and if you book early you can get really cheap flights. The more these fill up the more expensive they get though, so try and book early if you can.

If you do decide to fly then once you get to the airport you will be met with plenty of companies that allow you to hire a car. It is often a good idea to rent one before you arrive though so you can look at reviews and get the best price. Make sure you check with the provided which documents you need.

On the other hand you can get to Ibiza via ferry from Barcelona depending on your tastes. It only takes a few hours and can be a lot of fun. When going to Ibiza you should always choose the transport that is going to be the least stressful, because there is nothing worse than having a bad journey to your holiday. If in doubt it is probably better to pay a bit extra and get good quality transport rather than going for the very cheapest if it isn't going to be any good.

Wherever you decide to stay in Ibiza, because it is a small island if you have a rental car you will be able to see a lot of the island. Have fun and stay safe!

Glasgow flights Direct

By Craig Walker

Fortunately things have changed from around twenty five years ago when it was thought by travel experts that Glasgow flights direct to most European destinations were unsustainable. Because of this travellers were forced to fly via London Birmingham and Manchester airports.

There were alternatives available to travellers to get to other European destinations whilst avoiding the English airports. The alternatives were to fly via Dublin for flights to North America or via Amsterdam for flights to the Middle East or Australia.

Today the previous flight options are still there but fortunately so are many new direct flights from Glasgow than ever before. The new low cost airlines are offering travellers more destinations and cheaper airfares. People no longer think of travel as a luxury as they now travel to more destinations and more often but for shorter durations.

The growth of the internet has definitely helped as without this cheap distribution method the costs of the flights would have to reflect this.

With greater access to more and more European cities offering new experiences for the traveller combined with cheaper living costs there, people can afford to travel and the growth in city breaks has been huge.

With direct flights from Glasgow there is no longer the need to waste most of your trip sitting in a departure lounge waiting for a connecting flight.

Use the internet and shop around checking all the flights from Glasgow airport to your chosen airport. Simply do the same for the accommodation and you are bound to find a cheap hotel and you have put together you very own cheap short break from Glasgow airport.

The cheap flights from Glasgow have also brought many foreign visitors to the Glasgow area. Between mid-October flights form Scandinavian countries arrive in Glasgow to get Christmas presents at cheaper prices than they would at home.

When you next think of taking a short break don't discount the idea of travelling abroad. With a cheap flight and accommodation, a visit to one of the many European destinations could be cheaper than you expect.

Travel Better By Not Planning Ahead

By Magnus Lilliputt

There?s only so much time for travel in a year. Some people try to make the most of it by planning every step of the journey. Other people prefer the open road without any schedule at all. When a person travels from place to place, they can either come up with a strict itinerary, or they can just pick a direction and go with it. The question then becomes: which one is the best for you?

When you don?t have a final destination in mind, things can get out of hand. This isn?t a travel method for everyone. A lot of things can go wrong while you?re out on your own, and that?s why so many people are far more comfortable when they have a set itinerary they can follow.

However, there is a certain sense of adventure that can be missed when every step of a journey is planned out in excruciating detail. Sometimes it?s the unexpected things that can be the most memorable.

When you do decide to travel without any set plans you need to be able to deal with the various obstacles that might crop up. You could end up driving from hotel to hotel, only to find they are all full. Or you might waste entire days wandering around a city because you can?t find anything interesting. When you only have a certain amount of time for a vacation, many people don?t want to spend a whole day just moving from place to place.

The good news, however, is that when you don?t have a specific itinerary then you can take all the time you want, and maybe, just maybe, getting lost in an unknown city can lead you into some surprising experiences. Road tripping this way can create some completely new experiences.

For example, if you travel more spontaneously you simply pick a direction and start going. Different cities and states have a wide range of landmarks and tourist attractions; some more well known than others. The only way to find them is to take your time and explore and see what they have to offer. If nothing catches your eye, you can just keep moving.

Not everyone will want to travel this way. In order to do it successfully you will have to strictly budget your trip as you go. If you run out of money on the road you?re going to be in a lot of trouble. Suddenly going home, feeding yourself, and finding lodgings will be next to impossible. Living off the land looks fun in the movies, but it?s more difficult than it looks.

Travelling without travel plans gives you the chance to be spontaneous and discover some exciting possibilities. In order to get the most out of your trip, though, you have to be able to control your spending and look for opportunities where you normally wouldn?t.

Motorhome Rental For The First Time

By Steve MacDonald

It was the summer of 2009 and I was living in The French Alps, Serre Chevalier in the Hautes Alpes to be exact. My eldest daughter was 5 years old and my newest baby girl, nearly 2 months. I had lived in the French Alps for about seven years and both my parents and my parents-in-law were all still very much alive and reasonably well, but not great travellers now that they had reached their mid 70s. As they all live in the UK, the only real option was to visit England so that they could meet their new granddaughter.

Of course their were other things we had to do such as an old friend of mine was celebrating his 'half century' birthday party, and there were my two brother-in-laws that my wife and I hadn't seen for over ages.

I thought long and hard about how to do all this: it was my plan to drive my car to the UK, but then what? This was the height of summer, which is prime time holiday season in England - places to stay would be either booked up or just simply too expensive. So I thought about camping in a tent, but only for a minute, before my wife pointed out that this very very impractical with a 2 month old baby. I had to come up with another plan...

I decided to hire a motorhome from Motorholme in the UK. The company had well over 400 motorhomes dotted around the UK and surprisingly enough still had some available for August even though I was making my enquiry at the end of July. I chose to hire a motorhome in Arborfield, a small village in Berkshire which was a fairly central location for our travels. I called a UK Freephone number, 0800 612 8719 to make the enquiry and I spoke to the very pleasent Sheena who helped me with my booking. I was surprised how easy it all was, a credit card number confirmed the booking and then there was a minimal amount of paperwork just to provide the 'legalities' for the insurance for the motorhome.

On arrival in the UK I decided to drop my family off at my brother-in-laws in London, I then went off to the motorhome hire pickup point in Reading where I met Anne who showed me around the motorhome, a 2004 Eldiss Autoquest 200. She showed me all the features that I would be using such as hot and cold running water, gas central heating. My only concern at this point was how I would fit my child car seats into the motorhome for when they are travelling along. Lap belts were provided in the rear but they weren't facing forwards, which meant I couldn't point my kids in the right direction. I decided to 'work something out later' as it was getting dark now. I left my car at the pick up point as agreed.

The drive back to London was fine, I've driven some quite large vans in my time, so the size wasn't a problem and indeed the 2.0l diesel engine seem to take it along the M4 at 70mph with no problem. The radio/CD player kept me company on the way back into London. When I got back home I realised there was a way I could thread the rear seat belts differently to at least give my baby the correct orientation.

The next day we packed up the motorhome with all our things and set off for Paignton in Devon, where my 'little' brother-in-law lives. This was an easy stop as we just parked in his driveway and ran everything off the auxilliary battery and gas. We stayed in Devon a few days, which included 3 nights at Beverly Park - a campsite with a kids club, crazy golf, plus indoor and outdoor pools. We had a day at Paignton Zoo and a day on the beach at Torquay, so all was good.

The next stage was my Mum an Dad in Stoke-on-Trent, not quite as fun as Devon, but 5 year old Maddy loved seeing her Grandma Jean and Grandad Gordon. The motorhome just about fitted in the driveway of their bungalow and we had to level it using the ramps provided. I had thought of hooking it up to the mains, but it seemed to be no problem to just use 12 volts and gas. Our trip was sadly coming to an end now, but we still managed to squeeze in my 'in-laws' in Leighton Buzzard, an annual reunion from my wife's friends in Muswell Hill, London and even the 50th birthday in Watford and a trip to see some old friends of ours from France who now live out in the sticks in Essex.

Overall I was pleased with the motorhome and the overall motorhome hire experience, but next time I would probably look for one with a permanent double bed at the rear and some single beds nearer the front that would double as seating for the passengers. I will probably buy a motor home one day, but I really do think I will hire a few first to get a feel of what is on offer by different manufacturers and which is perfect for my family and the way we travel.

Why Travel Agents Can Find You A Better Deal

By Gary Worcester

When you're learning about something new, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available from travel agents in Philadelphia. This informative article should help you focus on the central points relating to PA travel agents.

Online travel sites are also starting to offer insurance but it rarely covers all of a trip and there are still fees involved to change everything. Online reservation software can make the difference in travel agency growth or decline. Travel companies work on small margins and efficient online reservation software is the lifeblood of travel companies. Online travel agents might ask themselves whether it is worth displaying such advertisements.

Call the highly trained and friendly Travel Agents 2U consultants for swift and unbeatable service to ensure your travels turn out the way you want them to. We promise unrivalled financial protection and our consultants are experienced and seasoned travellers themselves, who care about looking after you.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of travel agents in Philadelphia is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about PA travel agents.

Travel agents have access to the latest information on hotels, flights and destinations that a client doesn't have access to. This knowledge is invaluable. It is therefore essential for travel-related websites to offer useful, pertinent and easy-to-find information alongside a booking facility if appropriate. The Internet can be used to fully research a destination, book all aspects of the holiday including travel and communicate others who have the same ideas or have been through similar experiences. Visits by residents of Great Britain accounted for virtually all of this decrease, falling by almost 16,000 (7%) to 208,300. Meanwhile, visits by residents of Other Europe and North America recorded slight increases to 149,500 and 45,200 respectively. Visitors enjoy an almost infinite number of options covering every type of cuisine imaginable. Dubai hotels offer some of the highest quality meals to be found.

Ask friends for recommendations -- eventually someone will offer a glowing recommendation of a travel agent. Remember that different agents will have different expertise. Ask your travel agent about the nitty-gritty details of your trip, including airport connections, bus and taxi services, tipping, foreign currency conversion, and safety concerns such as government-issued travel advisories and warnings. Most importantly, get a phone number that you can use for after-hours emergencies (at the airport early Sunday morning after your wedding, for instance) and on your trip (preferably toll-free or collect if calling from outside the country).

Travel Agents 2U has been providing a flexible, efficient, reliable and comprehensive service to its business and corporate customers for many years. They are able to design, plan and book independent travel itineraries for all your business travel plans and can also arrange additional services like booking hotel accommodation stopovers and connecting trains to make your journey more agreeable.

Take time to consider the points presented on travel agents in Philadelphia above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action to do with PA travel agents.

Costa Rica's Incredible Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Arribada

By Victor C. Krumm

She was just fifteen as she drifted offshore in the warm, tropical eastern Pacific off the small beach called Ostional in a country that, about 500 years earlier, Christopher Columbus had discovered and named "Costa Rica", the "rich coast." She was an olive ridley sea turtle.

The nearly daily afternoon tropical rains of December had slipped away as the marine turtle waited expectantly. The moon was in its final quarter and, though she did not know why, it was having an effect on her.

As it has done for unimaginable epochs, the moon was silently passing through its seemingly everlasting phases. Though she could not know it, it was drawing this olive ridley turtle ashore. She was not alone. At first, a few yards away, another Pacific sea turtle joined her, then a third, followed by a dozen, then hundreds, thousands, now tens of thousands of marine sea turtles. For more than one hundred million years it had been thus: vast migrations of ancient creatures, culminating when the moon was in this phase.

There is something magical about life. A few months earlier, this marine turtle and the tens of thousands now alongside her were scattered across the Pacific Ocean, some more than 2500 miles away.

Though food was plentiful far out in the Pacific, something was stirring inside her. She and hundreds of thousands like her felt the same inexorable pull to return to Ostional Beach. They had to go back to where they had hatched.

Now, months later, she waited in the soft moonlight just a few hundred meters from her destination. She was ready. Over the thousands of miles she had swum, she had come across several different male olive ridley sea turtles in the clear tropical waters and bred with them in the deep ocean. Like her, they too were being affected by something unseen, a force nearly as old as life itself. It was something so compelling that her race had been going back to the same Costa Rica beach since the days of dinosaurs.

The marine turtle was somehow returning to the very beach where had hatched in 1995. No one knows how a Pacific marine turtle finds the exact beach where she started life. Ostional Beach is only a few hundred meters long. Now part of Costa Rica's Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, it is probably the most important olive ridley marine turtle nesting site on earth. Wonderfully, the year this turtle hatched, about half a million females had nested here in massive "arribadas."

Unfortunately, our sea turtle's mother will not nest at Ostional this year. For twenty years, her mother had joined massive Ostional arribadas annually and she would have done so again except that she drowned in a shrimping net not fitted with an internationally required turtle escape device. Long-line fishermen killed thousands more in what is euphemistically called "incidental catch" almost completely avoidable simply by using larger fishing hooks. Untold thousands died needlessly by eating plastic bags.

Of course, the tens of thousands of olive ridleys just offshore know none of this. As we look out over the water in the pale moonlight, there are now so many that it almost seems one could walk on their backs for at least a mile. We look in awe at the sheer numbers of God's creation. They don't know or comprehend that they were on earth long before there was a Tyrannosaurus Rex. They don't know that we are waiting for them to come ashore so that when they lay their eggs on this tiny wildlife refuge, men, women, and children will legally dig up nests and take one million eggs in return for protecting the rest of the clutches and preserving the species. They only know that this is where they are meant to be.

Then, as quietly as they first appeared beyond the surf, as silently as they gathered, as patiently as they waited, they begin to come ashore. One turtle, a second, dozens, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands---even more than that--lumber onto the beach and nest. All night, all day, day after day in a spectacular display of life. As timeless as the moon itself. Arribada.

Razor Scooters

By Owen Jones

The Razor A scooter ... What does that phrase make you think about? If you have children, I'm certain that you've already heard of the Razor A scooter series, but they weren't about when we were children. However, the idea was, even though I forget the brand names from my childhood.

I adored my two-wheeled, kick-powered scooter when I was young. Mum and Dad had their automobile, my elder brothers had their bicycles and I had my scooter. It didn't go very fast, but then, I didn't go very far either, but it was transport and it gave that feeling of freedom. I had my wheels and I was mobile!

Well, the modern equivalent of that scooter is the Razor A scooter series. And they really are modern too! They are a long chalk from the simple scooters of years ago. The Razor A scooter series was introduced in the year 2000 and is sturdy, strong, collapsible and safe.

The Razor A scooter series is sold in several forms to accommodate different age groups, requirements and pockets. For example, the Razor A scooter is meant for children of six years and older, while the Razor A2 scooter, the Razor A3 scooter and the Razor Pro scooter are meant for older, heavier, more demanding and more skilful riders. With prices starting at about $25 none of them is expensive.

The Razor A scooter series is made from aircraft-grade light aluminium and weighs in at only six pounds. That's light enough for any young child to be able to carry, if required, without risk of injury. It is also collapsible, which means that it is easy to carry under your arm, in the trunk of your car or on the bus. Storage is a cinch too.

The Razor A scooter series is height-adjustable too in that the handlebars can be raised as your child grows up or if an older sibling wants a go. It also has a heavy-duty braking system, which is obviously very important as these scooters will easily reach speeds of five or six mph on the flat and much more on an incline. Going down, that is.

The Razor A scooter range also has lesser and greater stable mates. The Razor Kiddie Kick is intended for children younger than six and has a third wheel for greater stability, although it is just as robust and long-lasting as the Razor A scooter series. The Razor A scooter range is intended for 'young-minded' people from the age of six. I use the words 'young-minded' because it is quite the fashion now, to put one in the car and scooter the last mile or two into work or college. That mile or two every day will save you fuel and give you extra exercise over a long period of time. After all, it all adds up, doesn't it?

Furthermore, for those who want a bit more power, there are the Razor E100(S), Razor E200(S) and the Razor E300(S), which are electrically powered scooters. The (S) means that they have a seat attached.

So, why not introduce your kid to the idea of mobility with a Razor A scooter? Give your child the opportunity to look back on his or her younger years in 20-30 years time and remember zooming about at three-five mph on a Razor A scooter.

Mexico's Top Gay Friendly Beaches, Cancun

By Ricardo d Argence

Those of you who are going to holiday in Mexico will be pleasantly surprised at the beautiful beaches around Cancun's hotel zone. A storm carried a lot of the sand away but it is now thankfully restored thanks to over 200 hundred people helping to restore these fantastic beaches.

The accommodations at the posh resorts are not the only thing about Cancun that is inviting and luxurious, the beaches are inviting as will.

The beaches, after being rebuilt, seem 50% bigger than what they used to be. This gives all the visitors to this lovely area a lot more space to relax and enjoy all the activities that are on offer.

The beaches that are sheltered from the strong currents of the Caribbean by the Isla Mujeres are commonly referred to as the north side beaches. The visitors that come to the beach will be pleased to discover that the wave and wind conditions are very calm. These conditions make it perfect to enjoy swimming and other family activities.

Vacationers that like to take part in water sports might like the beaches on the east side.

On the east side, starting at the Hotel Zone where the land extends in to the Caribbean is where Playa Las Perlas is located. This beach is popular for both water sports and swimming and has plenty of restaurants and bars close by.

Playa Linda is a beach on the north side an area where there are many tourist destinations; because of the calm crystal clear water here, this beach is ideal for family water sports. Those of you who enjoy scuba diving will enjoy the tours on offer in this area.

Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas are two beaches that are known for their pristine sands and relaxing atmosphere. Many water sports enthusiasts flock to these beaches since the waves are more active than other areas making water skiing, boating and water skiing a blast.

One of the most popular beaches around Cancun can be found at Playa Caracol. This beautiful beach has long stretches of glimmering soft sand and clear shallow water leading out into a smooth sandy bottom. This is a hugely popular area for families with the children enjoying the crystal clear water and later can enjoy looking round the shops close by or enjoy a delicious meal at one of the nearby restaurants.

Playa Delfines is popular for single and gay couples, in fact it is known as the unofficial gay beach in Cancun. Just look for that grassy slope down to the beach and you'll understand what I am saying. Not just that it is a great place for sunning, surfing, and everything in between. Plus, this is one place where the sun is not the only thing that is burning hot.

Those who choose a beach at the east side of Cancun will experience far breezier and higher waves than the north side, although there are still some beaches that are family friendly to choose from.

Chac Mool, Playa Marlin, and Gaviota Azul are the beaches that are the furthest north on the eastern side of the hotel zone. Many people feel that these beaches are not as glamorous as some other beaches due to the high waves. For this reason, these beaches are enjoyed by people that enjoy parasailing and windsurfing.

Play Ballenas can be found in one of the most exciting areas in Cancun, offering plenty of land exploration as well. This is a really friendly beach that offers all kinds of fun activities like water skiing, tubing, boating and swimming.

A few beaches that are known for spectacular scenery in the area are Playa Delfines and Playa Nizuc. These beaches also offer many lovely restaurants that are enjoyable after a lond day of fun in the sun.

Gay Hot Spots to Travel in Mexico

By Ricardo d Argence

When you think about Mexican culture, what do you think of? More than likely, you think of a culture of machismo and the traditional values of the Catholic Church. While all of this is also true, Mexico is a modern society and as in the US and other Western countries, homosexuality is accepted in Mexican society.

Civil unions between gays have been legalized in the northern border state of Coahuila and Mexico City. The states of Veracruz and Michoacan are on the verge of passing the same measures just like Jalisco, Colima, Puebla and Guerrero.

It seems Mexico is a more progressive country than you may have thought! This is not to say that many gays and lesbians are not in the closet in Mexico. Despite broad acceptance, many homosexuals still prefer to keep their preferences a secret.

In general, Mexicans are more private about their personal lives than are Americans. Mexico is a country which gladly welcomes vacationers gay and straight alike. Mexico is such a gay friendly country that Planetout named it the top destination for gay travel in 2007.

So, let's take a look at the Mexico's top gay destinations.

Cancun. This is the number one spot, having wrested the title from Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco. While you commonly think of college kids on spring break when you think of Cancun, it's also a great place for gay and lesbian vacationers.

Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula. This means that Cancun has a subtropical climate. The average temperatures range 81 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The best places for gays to go to for a bit of night life is downtown which is about fifteen minutes from the Hotel Zone.

The Karamba is the most popular club with a 30 year history of drawing a young crowd including a lot of international tourists. The Picante is another one not to miss, with its friendly mixed crowd. This club is popular with gay and straight, transvestites and everyone else.

Villas Tacul is Cancun's gay-oriented beach, but the Playa Delfines is more popular, being the city's largest beach. Most of Cancun's more than 100 hotels are gay friendly, so there's always a great place to stay.

Mexico City. As Mexico's largest city (and in fact, Mexico City is even larger than New York City), Mexico City has a large gay and lesbian community and has even legalized same sex civil unions. Mexico City offers a lot of gay nightlife and culture, with many gay clubs, including a few dozen in the Zona Rosa alone. There are gay theater groups and an annual Gay Pride Parade.

Guadalajara. The second largest Mexican city also has a large homosexual population, including a large lesbian community. The city has a gay cultural center and a widely popular gay radio show. Guadalajara has really large population of lesbians. For entertainment there are gay bars, and about two dozen gay clubs located mostly in the Zona Rosa. And then there is the Annual Gay Pride Parade.

There is a long list of gay bars and clubs. But here is just a couple. The Angel's bar that plays electronica. Monica's Disco plays Latin rhythm disco. To locate other clubs and bars for a bit of nightlife look for La Guia Rosa or Zona Gay.

Cross Menai Straits Bridge, Beautiful Anglesey Coastal Views from Classic Bridge by Telford

By David Phillips

When you approach Anglesey in North Wales you will see the enigmatic Menai Straits Bridge, designed and constructed by Thomas Telford, the famous 19th century engineer. The strong tidal waters crossing to Anglesey from the mainland has been a challenge for centuries and finally Telford and his team managed to come up with an innovative design which was up to the task. You will enjoy the coastal views from this bridge as you cross to the island for your vacation.

A look back in history hints that Menai Bridge, today a bustling town next to the bridge, was a Roman settlement, which was accessed by a small ferry across the Menai Straits, linking the place where island and mainland are closest. Looking north you may see the Lavan sands, west of Bangor, from where monks bound for Penmon Priory would make their way at low tide for Llanfaes on Anglesey, just north of Beaumaris.

So what events led to Telford being commissioned with the task of constructing such this impressive Menai Straits Bridge, an innovative example of civil engineering for the early nineteenth century? Following the Act of Union between Britain and Ireland in 1800 pressure grew for a far more efficient transport link between London and the Irish capital, Dublin.

When you think how the famous composer George Frederick Handel struggled to reach Dublin from Holyhead in 1742, it shows you how difficult it was travelling between England and Ireland. After getting through the challenging Snowdon Mountain range, there was still the Menai Straits crossing and then the voyage to Dublin itself.

With a sea route across to Ireland and a port at Holyhead, the missing link was an improved crossing to Anglesey island. Political pressure was applied in the right places, and work began on the bridge in 1819, with the two massive landmark towers being constructed from Penmon limestone. While the bridge was originally supported by 16 huge wrought iron chain cables that reached across the 175 metres of expanse, they had to be replaced by steel cables just before the Second World War.

When you consider that a coach journey from London to Holyhead took around 36 hours before 1826, it shows how travel has been transformed since before the bridge was built. Following completion of the Menai Suspension Bridge the journey time was reduced to 27 hours. While a journey by car today from London to Holyhead can take around 6 to 7 hours, showing the benefits of Telford's Menai Straits Bridge, the internal combustion engine and modern motorways.

Arriving on Anglesey witness some beautiful coastal and woodland scenes from this iconic bridge across Menai Straits, and nearby some well signposted coastal paths with fairly easy access. Cast your eyes northwards from the bridge and you will see Menai Bridge harbour with small yachts and motor craft moored nearby. These are strong tidal waters and you may see a yacht passing below the bridge, making its way for Beaumaris and then Puffin Island.

Standing on the bridge look to the south west and observe the powerful Menai Straits tidal waters sweep towards the road and rail crossing of Britannia Bridge, and then to the open sea after Caernarfon Castle. Off the Anglesey Coastline to the south is a small island, Ynys Gorad Goch, while on the shoreline a Statue of Admiral Nelson stands, and nearby is the former Indefatigable Sailing School. You can indulge your senses in all these experiences from the high vantage point of this enigmatic Menai Straits Bridge.

Saint-Louis Senegal

By Matt Cutter

In the north-west of Senegal, near the mouth of the Senegal River, lies the town of Saint-Louis, capital of French Senegal from 1673 until independence in 1960.

The centre of the old colonial city lies on a narrow island in the river, measuring just 2 km (1.2 mi) long by about 400 in (1,312 ft) wide, although the modern city now sprawls on the mainland either side.

The first permanent French settlement in Senegal, Saint-Louis was founded in 1659 by French traders on an uninhabited island. Named after the French king Louis, the town commanded trade along the Senegal River, exporting slaves, animal hides, beeswax and gum arabic.

Between 1659 and 1779, the city was administered by nine different chartered companies. A Metis (Franco-African Creole) community soon developed, characterized by the famous signares. These bourgeois women entrepreneurs dominated the economic, social, cultural and political life of the city, creating an elegant urban culture with time for refined entertainments. They controlled most of the river trade and financed the principal Catholic institutions.

Louis Faidherbe became the Governor of French Senegal in 1854, and spent a great deal of money modernizing the town, including bridge building, setting up a drinking water supply, and providing an overland telegraph line to Dakar. The fortunes of the town began to dwindle as Dakar became an ever more important city. Saint-Louis' port proved difficult for steam ships to access, and a railway between Saint-Louis and Dakar, opened in 1855, took most of its up-country trade.

Today Saint-Louis is a sleepy backwater which retains its lovely colonial architecture. In 2000 it was added to the World Heritage List, and many of its beautiful buildings are being renovated. Among the sites and monuments to see on the island are the Governor's Palace, a fortress built in the 18th century across from Place Faidherbe, the Gouvernance which comprises the town's administrative offices and Pare Faidherbe in the centre of town, named for the French governor.

The museum at the southern end of the island tells the story of Senegal's history and peoples, with displays of traditional clothes and musical instruments, and there are various mosques and catholic churches to visit.

The heritage of the signares lives on in Saint-Louis today, with the festivals for which the town is famous. Fanals, a night-time procession of giant paper lanterns, takes place at Christmas, usually coinciding with the Saint-Louis Jazz Festival, the most important jazz festival in Africa. The annual pirogue race, organized by teams of fishermen from Guet-Ndar, takes place on the river and makes a vibrant spectacle.

Destination Wedding Activities

By Pamela Kazmierczak

Destination weddings are becoming more and more popular these days. Whereas destination weddings can be a wonderful experience they can present their own challenges, including finding activities and entertainment to keep your guests busy.

Many brides like to have their weddings seaside, so they move the festivities to a beach locale, either on their local coast or somewhere more exotic like Jamaica, Caneel Bay or the Bahamas. In any event, there are several activities that can be planned around this theme. If the wedding is also a weekend event where guests will be around for more than just the wedding, the bride can plan a sailing excursion. Charter a boat for a day and bring your guests out on the water to relax, rejuvenate, and perhaps enjoy a meal. If the wedding is in the Caribbean, like at Cap Juluca, how about a cooking demonstration? The bride and groom can arrange for the wedding guests to enjoy a complimentary cooking demonstration put on by the hotel or a local cook. Since much of the food the guests eat while visiting for the wedding will be different than what they eat at home, they might enjoy learning how to prepare it for home enjoyment.

Say the wedding is in Hawaii, another popular destination wedding location. Here, you can plan several activities around the location. For example, what about a luau? This could even take the place of a more formal or conventional sit-down rehearsal dinner.

In Hawaii, guests will enjoy a hula lesson. Depending on the age of your guests, be sure there is enough time between the wedding and the lesson for the resting of aching bones, in case there are any.

At the wedding itself, there are many ways to incorporate the location into the ceremony itself. At a beachside reception, you can play "pass the shell", where a large shell is passed around and guests "listen" for some advice from the other world. Once they get a piece of advice (really something they think of themselves) they share it with the bride and groom, either verbally, or it can be written into a book for the couple.

Other pre-wedding activities can include guided tours, shopping excursions and wine tasting activities (if applicable). If you choose to include any of these activities keep in mind that the bride and groom (or their families) are expected to pay for the bulk of them. If you arrange a sailing excursion, for example, you are expected to pick up the tab for the trip. Do not tell people ahead of time that the activity will be x dollars. It's likely that won't sit well with them.

Since one of the great benefits of the destination wedding is that only your closest friends and family will likely surround you, you can plan some meaningful activities that you wouldn't plan if the wedding were a larger event. For example, you might plan a slumber party night with close friends that includes movies, popcorn and drinks in your hotel room, villa or cottage, depending on where the wedding is held.

Of course, if you plan a destination wedding, for some people this might double as their vacation. In that event, you might not want to schedule too many activities but instead let people find their own activities and entertainment both before and after the wedding.

6 Ways To Improve Gas Mileage Right Now!

By Leona Allen

While we may not be seeing the over-four-dollar per gallon prices we saw last summer, the cost to fill up your tank isn't cheap. Most experts agree we won't be seeing prices below two dollars per gallon again. And there's a good chance the prices will continue rising. Here are some painless ways to keep more money in your wallet.

1. Keep tires properly inflated. Improperly inflated tires are harder to spin and create extra drag. Check your tires frequently - it doesn't cost anything! Not only will you save on gas, but you'll be driving safer.

2. Have tires aligned. Poorly aligned tires also create drag, particularly on turns and while going uphill. Have your tires aligned at least every six to nine months.

3. Have your brakes checked. Brakes that are improperly aligned or worn make braking much less efficient, which in turn means you have to brake longer or harder, and burn more gas to accelerate again. Check your brakes whenever you have your tires aligned.

4. Have your engine tuned. If your engine isn't properly tuned, it runs less efficiently. Have your engine timing checked, and replace dirty or worn spark plugs.

5. Spend less time idling. You are getting no miles per gallon while you are idling. Although it takes more gas when you start your car, if you will be idling more than 30 seconds it is better to shut off your engine.

6. Improve your driving. Don't over-accelerate just to brake, like accelerating between stop signs more than you need to reach the next stop sign. Avoid stop-and-go traffic; do your errands during off-peak times when there is less traffic.

There are a lot of ways to improve gas mileage. Start be visiting sites like www.gasforlessmoney.com and start putting these gas-saving tips into practice. A gas mileage improvement of just 10% actually translates into a savings of $5-$10 by reducing how frequently you have to fill your tank!

Elephantine Island of the Nile River

By Terry Miskin

Known to the Ancient Egyptians as Abu or Yabu, meaning elephant, Elephantine Island is a truly ancient site resting as it does at the First Cataract of the Nile, and creating a natural boundary between Egypt and Nubia.

Being the largest island at Aswan, it was easily defensible and at one time was thought to be a major ivory trading center, possibly giving rise to its name. But rumor has it the name may also arise from the elephant-shaped granite boulders lying around its shores.

It is said that Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataracts, lived in caves beneath the island and controlled the waters of the Nile. Nowadays, the southern tip of the island holds the ruins of the Temple of Khnurn, which was rebuilt in the 30th dynasty. Up until 1822, there were also temples to Thutmose III and Amenhotep III here, but the Ottoman government in their wisdom destroyed them.

Elephantine is an exquisite island, steeped in ancient history and blessed with significant artifacts. Transported instantly back in time, you wander under banana trees and date palms through colorful Nubian villages with narrow, dusty alleyways and mud houses painted or carved with crocodiles and fish.

On the edge of the island is one of the oldest Nilometers in Egypt. It is a stone `yardstick' used to measure the height of the River Nile. It was last reconstructed in Roman times and was still in use as late as the 19th century.

Its 90 steps, leading down to the river, are marked with Hindu-Arabic, Roman and hieroglyphic numerals, and inscriptions carved deep into the rock during the 17th century can be seen at the water's edge.

Elephantine Island is a green, flower-festooned oasis of calm lapped by the turquoise waters of the Nile and clinging quietly to its exotic past.
